2016 National Association of Landscape Professionals Merit Award of Excellence for Cane Island

The theme at Cane Island is “close to it all, a world apart.” This is evident in the community’s small town Texas charm that meets the sophistication of a master plan filled with creative and unexpected amenities. More than a new home and a new community, Cane Island is a whole new way of life with a blend of rural character and touches of high technology living.

Upon entry into Cane Island from the newly constructed I-10 interchange, a three-acre lake with cascading fountains welcomes you along Cane Island Parkway, beautifully lined with mature oak trees. Many of the oak trees are several decades (some as old as 75 years). They were rescued and strategically placed along Cane Island Parkway and in the Amenity Village.

Continuing along Cane Island Parkway, beauty is always in bloom underneath the iconic “living” arches, adorned with perennial plantings that change color through the seasons. These arches along with the living solar powered light towers positioned along the parkway are examples of how rustic, pastoral elements are combined with technology for a modern flair. Cane Island Parkway’s lanes are separated with sweeping land forms to further convey the rural feel and highlight the surrounding views, including the local fauna found on the adjacent ranch. Visitors shouldn’t be surprised if they are greeted by wildlife such as elk and deer along this quarter-mile stretch. The shaded drive will be a memory point for potential homeowners and a long term iconic roadway for the community.

Past the arches, you begin to enter the community and immediately come upon the Amenity Village. This is the center of all activity, designed to provide year-round programming for residents of all ages. Indoor and outdoor spaces provide intimate areas for large or small group gatherings, and the buildings have been placed strategically to separate their uses and relationships.

The award-winning Amenity Village includes a fitness and welcome center with garden spaces and a yoga lawn that overlooks the elegant lap pool. This facility is surrounded by living walls to enhance one’s workout and relaxation experiences. The great lawn is centrally located and offers space for any type of group event, from weddings to community classes. Adjacent community gardens and a nursery complement the 1500 square-foot conservatory in an all-glass enclosure. Multi-level tree houses are perched high among the 75-year-old towering specimen oak trees and overlook the Amenity Village. These tree houses are connected by bridges and overlook the amphitheater; a perfect spot for watching movies or concerts. A lake with walkways, piers, and docks provide opportunities for evening strolls, bird watching, and fishing for the whole family.

HERITAGE PARKS

Cane Island is a community founded in the heritage of the region with an eye towards the future. This is evident in its planned open spaces, amenity areas, and neighborhoods crafted carefully with the idea of Katy in mind. Six parks are planned for the entire master plan with the theme of each park paying homage to a historically significant element of the area. Deemed “heritage parks”, the first phase includes the “Coastal Prairie” heritage park which is the main entry along Cane Island Parkway. The design, landscape, and programming of this area celebrates the native prairies with majestic oak lined streets and water canes as a buffer to the piney woodlands. Aside from aesthetics, the lake offers docks for fishing, trailheads and bridges, and bird habitats for the native wildlife. Interpretive signage throughout makes this park a learning experience for the natural ecosystems. North of the lake lies an expansive event lawn designed to host concerts and other community gatherings, and serves as a meeting place for groups to embark upon exploration of the miles of planned trails and other parks from the trailhead. Future phases will include additional heritage parks with themes that will pay tribute to the original uses of the land.
