Partnering with a local architect and construction company, AndersonBaron provided planning, design, and construction observation services for the new Environmental Technology Center (ETC) at Chandler/Gilbert Community College. This facility will be part of an outdoor classroom representing a variety of environmental processes. The facility will detail the latest technology relating to solar and wind energy, water harvesting, and drought-tolerant plant material containing vegetable gardens, flowering ground cover, herbs, and demonstration areas. ETC will provide a low-impact and cost-efficient living classroom that will serve as a hub for environmental education and resources for students, local schools, non-profit programs, and community members.

The project also expanded the community gardens into what is known as “The Water Project”. The intent of this project is to educate Arizonans on the role and importance of water with respect to the area’s heritage, and to explore a sustainable future through an effective management plan. This portion of the project engages users via an interactive “living classroom”, and hands-on learning through educational stations. The classroom features weather stations recording rainfall, a water harvesting area, and an aquifer station to note the importance of usable and sustainable water. A historical simulation canal will run through the center of the project, connecting users to the process of how water was transported and harvested in early Arizonian life.

This project will continue to grow over time, with multiple educational disciplines creating and building stations to enhance the gardens. While CGCC students will be the main group developing and using the project, it will also provide opportunities for educational collaborations between CGCC members, community members, K-12 students from surrounding schools, and other local businesses through the school’s outreach programs.
